🔎 South Africa vs Overseas for your next business idea?

Here’s what Tarzan has for you today:

  • Confined Coffin: Paying $250k to implode

  • Immigration Irritation: Building a business in SA vs overseas

  • Billionaire Battle: Musk challenges Zuckerberg to a cage fight

A Titanic trip to die for!

Even before Rose left Jack to die in the ocean while the Titanic sank over 3,000m (12,000ft) to the sea bed, people have been obsessed with the ship. In fact, there are wealthy people willing to pay $250k to sit uncomfortably next to other wealthy strangers just to get a glimpse of the vessel.

3 days since the submarine went missing, Ret. Navy Capt. David Marquet, a former submarine captain described what the 5 passengers were most likely going through if the vessel hadn’t imploded:

  • Thirsty and starving - No food or water for days

  • Freezing cold - the water at 12,000ft is slightly below freezing temperature

  • Headaches and nausea - 5 passengers exhaling carbon dioxide without ventilation can do that

Its said that the implosion would’ve been instantaneous. Perhaps that the best of a bad bunch of options for the wealthy passengers.

Office Teaser

Office teasers are here for Tarzan to help you stand out in the office - it’s a pleasure!

Basketball was invented in 1891 - it took 15 years for what logical change to be made to the game?

The hoop and net! In the early years of the sport, the baskets had no nets, so after each successful shot, someone had to climb a ladder to retrieve the ball. Eventually, a net was added to the basket to make it easier to retrieve the ball and slow down its descent after a successful shot.

South Africa vs Overseas for your next business idea?

We have a sneaky suspicion Johannes is going to be more commonly pronounced as “JO-HA-NESS” instead of “YO-HUH-NIS”. Immigration is real!

There are dozens of thoughts to work through when you are thinking of starting your own business. South Africans in particular may have one extra - TO STAY OR NOT TO STAY.

Tarzan has highlighted 3 topics to ponder on when thinking about starting in SA vs overseas (most commonly the UK, USA or Australia):

  • IDEA CREATION - South Africa is behind the times: while this may seem negative, it can often mean South Africans can just copy the trends and new business ideas from our overseas friends. You essentially have a blueprint on what works there - just adapt for an SA market.

  • MARKET SIZE - Big pond vs small pond: To put it in perspective, the number of online shoppers in the US is 218million people, compared to roughly 22million online shoppers in SA. No matter what industry, the South African market is automatically a lot smaller than in the US. Yes, yes, the market might be more competitive in the US but the majority of the population is far more advanced compared to SA, meaning there is more sales to go around.

  • ECONOMY - but the Rand is kak hey!: Startup costs vary depending on the business. For online businesses, you most likely will use the same platforms no matter where you are so the country you earn money from is key to how expensive it is. But where the real difference comes in is the profits in the relevant country’s currency - decent profits in SA gets you a holiday to the Vaal River. Decent profits in a 1st world country gets you a holiday to the Maldives. What is your choice?

Tarzan’s personal choice would be to live in South Africa but earn that foreign cheddar!

Obviously there are many things to think about and arguments to have but Tarzan is keeping this short and sweet for you! Feel free to reply with an argument to continue this conversation.

A nerdy cage fight

A 51-year-old overweight CEO who spends over 80 hours a week working vs a 39-year-old computer geek that has more data on you than your mom does. As if these guys didn’t have enough to do, they are taunting each other on social media.

Here’s what you might have missed:

  • Zuckerberg plans to launch a competitor to Twitter

  • Internal meeting notes were leaked mentioning that this competitor would be ‘sane’ - eluding that Twitter is not being run sanely

  • Since then, Musk has been taunting Zuckerberg on Twitter with statements like “Zuck my 👅”.

  • Elon sarcastically tweeted that he is sure the Earth can’t wait to be under Zuck’s thumb with no other options and “At least it will be ‘sane’. Was worried about that”.

  • The following social posts of Elon suggesting a cage match and Zuckerberg accepting in Khabib fashion.

These keyboard warriors need to appease the masses and get a fight confirmed or go back to running their companies. Tarzan thinks this fight should happen but it probably wont - Their insurance companies are probably sweating right now. Our money would be on the Zuck. Elon has has old-man-strength and is a semi-truck compared to Zuckerberg. But with Mark inspiring to be an MMA fighter and already winning Jiu-Jitsu tournaments, I doubt Elon will have a chance.

Let us know who you think will win - if the fight goes ahead, correct predictors may receive a little gift from The Jungle.
